I find the processing plugins aren't as system intensive as say a virtual instrument such as Omnisphere or Diva. 30-40 on average and I can do much more than that. #1 enemy is always going to be heat, both for longevity and for performance. Very pleased with the performance of both. The 2011 iMac scores around 1340, while the Macbook Pro 1270. Both have internal SSDs for the main drive. I use the Novabench App (also from the Mac Store) to test the speeds of my systems.
The iMac is still slightly faster than my Macbook Pro. I then bought a 2011 iMac 3.4 Ghz with 16 gigs. I actually had an 8-core mid 2006 Mac Pro with 12 Gigs of ram before this laptop. So at that temperature, fans will be at their max. For example, on mine the top temp threshold is 100 degrees. I just set the top and bottom temperature thresholds.

I think I purchased it, but used it for free for a while. SMC Fan Control is an App I downloaded from the Mac App Store I believe. The bigger fan will displace more air and be quieter.
The angled pad I'm not sure the manufacturer, but you can just find one that has a single big fan in the middle, rather than 2 small fans. I bought this Macbook Pro used in 2014, it was made in 2012 and it came with the SSD installed by the first owner. I work more on the production side, which is often more taxing than mixing.
